A Walk Around Bryn ArwThis circular route from Smithy's Bunkhouse takes you on some seldom-walked paths and along some quiet county roads. The walk offers the chance to see the tiny hamlet of Bettws and its even smaller church. From the high point of the walk you can see the start of the beautiful Llanthony Valley and it also takes you past the famous Skirrid Inn. This is reputed to be the oldest pub in England and Wales and it is where Owain Glyndwr rallied his troops before his attack on nearby Ewyas Harold. After passing through the Elizabethan Llanfihangel Court you start the climb towards the Skirrid Mountain and its famous landslip at the northern edge. Many local legends surround this landslip; some say that it was hit by Noah's Ark and others that it slipped on the night of the Crucifixion - this being only two. Local farmers used to gather soil from the slip to spread on their fields to ensure a better harvest. This walk will give you an opportunity to get to known a part of Monmouthshire, which although not far from habitation will give a sense of freedom and peace.
