Brechfa Common and
River Wye Walk

A walk of many contrasts starting with a gentle ascent up the Sgithwen Valley, across Cefn Gafros Common onto open grassland to the trig point at the 400 metre summit. From Mynydd Fforest there are panoramic views of the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains and Radnor Hills.

Crossing Brechfa Common you come to the Wildlife Reserve at Brechfa Pool, noted for attracting migrating birds and providing a winter home for teal.

After a steep descent into the village of Llyswen you can find refreshments in a choice of two pubs, a cafe and village shop.

The return journey follows a beautiful stretch of the River Wye passing ancient beech and chestnut trees and Llangoed Hall, claimed to been the site of the first Welsh parliament, restored by William Clough-Ellis and now run as a country house hotel by Sir Bernard Ashley, husband of the late Laura Ashley.
