A Gander at the Goose
This is a circular walk from Middle Ninfa Farm bunkhouse and campsite along the south-eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park via the characterful Goose and Cuckoo public house, giving fine and varied views east across the Usk Valley. The walk is some 8 miles (13 km), moderate-to-strenuous and takes about 6 hours including a lunch stop, preferably at the Goose and Cuckoo. At the top of the farm you reach a secluded lake in the beech-clad Punchbowl then walk south-east along bridleways, footpaths and quiet lanes around the foot of the escarpment of Mynydd y Garn-Fawr which divides Blaenavon and the Eastern Valley from the Usk Valley. The Goose and Cuckoo is reached via farmland. From there the route is through woodland then down to the scenic Monmouthshire and Brecon canal and a level walk along the towpath leads back to the lane which ascends to your starting point.
