Llanthony Priory and the Gospel Pass
This long and tough trail is a perfect introduction to the area for the more energetic visitor. It starts easily enough, following quiet roads and narrow lanes along the beautiful Usk Valley from Brecon to the historic town of Crickhowell. From here it climbs into the very heart of the spectacular Black Mountains, but it's not as hilly as you might imagine. The only real climb is a steady pull out of Crickhowell that leads up through the magnificent Vale of Ewyas to the impressive Gospel Pass. From this point it's downhill into the Wye Valley followed by a pleasant cruise on the more quiet roads back to Brecon. With so much to see plus an excellent selection of cycle-friendly bunkhouse accommodation spread around the route, the trail can be made much easier by splitting it up into a 2 day tour.
