Pengenffordd WalkA circular walk with a variety of gently hilly terrain visiting both Pwll-y-Wrach Nature Reserve in the Ennig Valley and the remains of Castell Dinas hill fort. The walk initially takes you up into the Black Mountains where you may see gliders from the local club soaring above you. For the energetic there is an optional detour bringing views of the River Ennig. Skirting around the village of Talgarth you come to Pwll-y-Wrach Nature Reserve, home to a wide variety of wild flowers including rare orchids, rich bird life and the enigmatic “Witch’s pool” and waterfalls. The return journey passes the remains of the 12th century hill fort at Castell Dinas. Its fabulous views explain why the Normans saw the strategic importance of this site which had been previously used as a fort during the Iron Age. From here it is an easy walk back to your starting point at the Castle Inn.
