Three Forts and a Cathedral
A moderate walk involving two stiff climbs separated by relatively easy sections, this walk is to the north of Brecon and gives panoramic views from the Black Mountains across the Central Beacons to the Carmarthen Fans and takes in some of the long history of the area. It starts with a sharp climb to Slwch Twmp, then a stroll through the north edge of Brecon skirting the Cathedral Groves to Brecon Cathedral, then a long steady climb to Pen-y-Crug. From here you drop down to circle the base of Pen-y-Crug through the village of Cradoc to Y Gaer. The route continues around the base of Pen-y-Crug back into Brecon past the boating pool to the Usk Bridge providing an excuse to ‘rest your feet and recover’ at the Boars Head pub that has an excellent selection of locally brewed ales and a patio overlooking the river. It can be wet, muddy, and slippery along route back from Y Gaer, as well as the bottom of Pen y Crug near the road to Cradoc. Good walking boots are essential at all times.
